The Kitesurfing Board or Kiteboard is one of the key elements in the Kite world. Every turn, every jump, and every adrenaline-pumping moment is made possible by choosing the right board.

This exciting and dynamic sport requires a board suited to your skills, style, and wind and sea conditions. In this article, we will explore the universe of Kitesurfing Boards, discovering the different types, distinctive features, and useful tips for finding the perfect one and having fun on the waves.

Kitesurfing Board Components and Materials

The Kitesurfing Board is composed of several essential elements that contribute to its overall design and performance:

  • Body of the board, the shape of which is called the shape, the curved course, on the other hand, is called the rocker. The board also includes the edges, which can be rounded (soft rails) or sharp (hard rails), as well as critical to performance. The ends of the board or tips, i.e., bow and stern, are rounded or square. The deck of the board is the top, while the hull is the bottom.
  • Pads: mats where the feet rest;
  • Streps: clamps in which you tuck your feet; they are critical for comfort and control;
  • Straps for securing;
  • Handle;
  • Fins
  • Leash and its attachment: element of attachment to the trapeze or ankle.

In terms of construction materials, synthetic mix of carbon, fiberglass, fiberglass, polyethylene and PVC are preferred. However, it is not uncommon to find wooden Kitesurf Boards as well.

Length and width of Kitesurf Boards: sizes suitable for the kiter

The dimensions of a Kitesurf Board are crucial aspects to consider for the perfect choice, along with the weight, both of the board and the kiter.

The length of a kiteboard can be up to 170 cm overall. Longer boards, between 140 and 170 cm, are the most suitable for those who want to start, as they are easily controlled when the wind is strong and need less power to glide. Smaller boards, 110 to 130 cm, on the other hand, are perfect for light winds.

Small boards are being tested commercially: wide and short. Board widths currently range from 30 to 40 cm, up to and beyond that.

Kitesurf boards: 3 types for flying over waves

The board, a fundamental part of Kite equipment, will become the perfect ally for riding the wind and waves if chosen properly.

The first Kiteboards were, initially, Surfboards modified to fit Kitesurfing sails. Over time, they have evolved to be lighter, sturdier, and dynamically designed.

Here are the three main categories to distinguish:

1. One-way tables.

Designed for one-way navigation, they are divided into:

  • Surfboards: adapt to different types of waves and wind conditions, the shape resembles a surfboard;
  • Race directional boards: designed for competition, they are bulky, stronger and considerably more stable.

2. Bidirectional or Twin Tip Boards

If One-Directional Boards are designed to have only one direction of navigation, the concept of Twin Tip boards is different. The first major difference is that they have equal and symmetrical tips, meaning that you can easily switch positions without changing the position of your feet.

There are several models due to their versatility, making them suitable for those who enjoy freestyle, but not only! Being handy, they are recommended for new kiters.

The main types are:

  • Freeride boards: fast, comfortable and versatile, guaranteed stunts!
  • Freestyle boards: great for jumps, so they have good cushioning in landing.
  • Light Wind boards: wide and perfect for beginners;
  • Wakestyle boards: the concept is that of Wakestyle practice, so they are optimized for jumps.

3. Mutant and Asymmetric Tables.

Among the latest generation of Kitesurf Boards, there are some types of asymmetrical boards. The reason we find this design in the market, is to perfect some techniques.

A specially designed accessory is born. The sides of the board body are different according to use: one side designed for jumping, the other for speed.

One of these is the Mutant type. This is a unidirectional asymmetrical board that allows the kiter to surf in reverse.

Kitesurfing Board Maintenance

To maintain the optimal performance of your kitesurfing board and ensure long life and safety, it is essential to spend some time on its proper maintenance.

After a session, rinse your board with fresh water, dry it thoroughly, but don’t keep it in the sun for long. Finally, protect it by storing it in a special bag.

Remember the periodic checks that need to be done:

  • Tightening of screws and condition of plugs installed on the deck for attaching fins, straps and handle;
  • Checking for wear and bumps (surfaces and straps);
  • Adherence of straps.

Tribala’s advice: a guide to choosing and buying a Kiteboard

But how do you actually choose a kiteboard? If you don’t know where to start, you should know that there are two basic parameters to consider: kiter weight and home spot.

Once you have identified the two cornerstone principles, consider:

  1. Board model: for beginners, the Twin Tip is recommended;
  2. Size: best to favor a large board because it is easily maneuverable;
  3. Budget: remember that kitesurfing costs are substantial, despite this many companies are competitive in the market;
  4. Size: variable depending on the wind. 140 cm x 40 cm for light winds, 120 cm x 34 cm for strong winds. The important thing is that it is proportional to your weight, so not too small, nor huge.

New or used kitesurf board?

Opting for a new board offers the assurance of flawless performance and condition. However, choosing a used board may be cost-effective, allowing you to save money.

Cautions on buying a used kitesurf board

  1. Check for wear/repair on the deck and hull; the board should be totally undamaged. There should be no suspicious noises.
  2. Check straps for wear;
  3. Check for signs of failure on strap and handle attachment bushings;
  4. Pads must be securely attached to the deck and fins secure.
