For many centuries, scuba diving was limited and reserved only for a few daredevils, but today, thanks to the scuba diving licence, this extraordinary underwater universe is within reach of anyone fascinated by the idea of discovering the wonders that lie beneath the surface of the water.

The ocean, with its vastness and unexplored depths, represents one of the most fascinating mysteries of our planet, and the underwater world, rich in biodiversity and natural wonders, has always attracted human attention.

History of diving

Scuba diving has deep roots in human history. Since ancient times, individuals have sought to explore the deep sea, driven by curiosity and the need to gather resources from the sea.

However, it was not until the 20th century that the advent of the diving licence led to a major breakthrough in underwater exploration. In 1943, the famous French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and the engineer Émile Gagnan invented the ‘Aqua-Lung‘, a device that made it possible to breathe underwater autonomously and safely. This revolutionary discovery opened the door to a new era of scuba diving, making it accessible to a wide range of marine adventure enthusiasts.

The importance of the diving licence

The scuba diving licence is essential to ensure that divers acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to dive safely and ethically.

Proper training covers a number of aspects, such as safety procedures, equipment handling, water pressure compensation and underwater communication signals.

Without an appropriate diving licence, scuba diving can be dangerous for both the individual and the surrounding marine environment. A professional scuba diving course ensures that divers are prepared to face the challenges that the underwater world can present, promoting an exciting yet responsible experience.

Steps for obtaining a diving licence

Obtaining a diving licence is a process involving several steps and requirements. Below are the 8 general steps to obtain a diving licence:

1. Preliminary Requirements

Before starting the scuba diving course, you must be in good health and of a certain age (usually 10-12 years or older, depending on the school). In addition, a liability waiver form may have to be signed.

2. Scuba diving courses

The next step is to enrol in a diving course. There are different levels of certification, but the basic course is the ‘Open Water Diver‘. The Open Water Diver course will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and basic practical skills required to safely dive to a certain depth (usually 18-20 metres).

3. Studying theory

During the course, you will have to study manuals and teaching materials, and you may also attend theoretical lectures in the classroom or online. You will learn the fundamentals of physics, physiology and safety related to scuba diving.

4. Theoretical examination

At the end of the theoretical course, you will participate in a final examination that will ensure your full mastery of the fundamentals of diving.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to watch a video that will give you a preview of the diving skills you will practice, either in the pool or in a pool-like environment. Upon completion of the video, your instructor will be ready to demonstrate each skill in person.

5. Confined water training

After acquiring theoretical knowledge, you will move on to training in confined waters (such as swimming pools or shallow waters of the sea) to learn and practise basic skills, such as the use of diving equipment, breathing underwater, buoyancy management and buoyancy control.

6. Diving in open waters

Once you have successfully completed the confined water part, you will have to undertake a number of open water dives, usually under the supervision of an instructor, to demonstrate your ability to apply the skills learnt in real environments.

7. Handing over the diving licence

If you have successfully passed all phases of the course, you will receive the diving licence corresponding to the level you have reached (e.g. Open Water Diver licence).

8. Leveling up

Once you have obtained your basic licence, you will have the option of continuing on to more advanced courses to acquire further diving skills and abilities, such as the Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver or Divemaster.

Diving equipment and technology

Diving equipment has evolved tremendously over the years, helping to improve the diving experience significantly.

The masks allow a clear and comfortable view, while the fins improve underwater mobility. Compressed air cylinders allow people to breathe on their own, while dive computers monitor depth, dive time and decompression in order to avoid health risks.

These technologies have enabled divers to explore the deep sea with greater safety and awareness.

The biodiversity of the underwater world

The ocean is one of the largest ecosystems on the planet, and the underwater world is home to an extraordinary variety of creatures.

From colourful coral reefs to mysterious abyssal creatures, the marine biodiversity is astounding. Scuba diving offers the chance to observe these wonders up close, allowing divers to experience the beauty of unique habitats and come into contact with fascinating marine species.

With a diving licence, anyone can also contribute to the conservation of these habitats by participating in programmes to monitor and protect marine species.

The magical diving experience

The first scuba dive is never forgotten, in fact anyone who has ever experienced it would describe it as a true embrace with nature. Beneath the surface of the water, one is enveloped in a surreal peace, accompanied by the majesty of the inhabitants of the sea. Listening to one’s breath and floating lightly through the water creates a sense of harmony with one’s surroundings.

Scuba diving offers the chance to experience a unique adventure in an unknown and amazing world, and the scuba diving licence is the passport to access this magical dimension.

Book your scuba diving trip

The scuba diving licence is the privileged access to a mysterious but fascinating world waiting to be discovered. With the proper training and responsible use of equipment, divers can dive deep underwater, admiring the extraordinary biodiversity and beauty of the seabed.
